Eco-Friendly B-Pods®

The Plastic End of Life Problem

There’s a lot of plastic in the world, including food packaging. It’s convenient, affordable, food safe and preserves freshness (which reduces food waste). Yet we all know the issues with single use plastic. In fact, the problem isn’t plastic per se, it’s plastic waste. Despite good intentions, only 9% of plastic is actually recycled.

How Bruvi® is Addressing It

We believe in smart, practical solutions that reflect the realities of the existing infrastructure for recycling and waste disposal. That’s why our B-Pods® are uniquely designed to offer two responsible disposal options: improved recyclability and an ingenious solution that enables pods that end up in landfills to be repurposed into clean, renewable energy.1 That’s a breakthrough solution that creates an alternative pathway to responsible waste management while also addressing climate change. These are big steps in the right direction.

Responsible Options. Your Choice.

Guilt Free Toss™

B-Pods® can simply be tossed in the trash after use. No need to peel the lid, wash the cup or separate out the coffee grounds. That’s because our B-Pods® have been uniquely designed to biodegrade in landfills in a handful of years instead of 500+ years, and without leaving microplastics behind. Biogases collected can then be repurposed into clean, renewable energy in applicable landfills.1

B-Pods® (both the outer cup and inner filter) are made to be recyclable.2 We use only PP#5 (polypropylene) as it is accepted for curbside recycling in a majority of communities in the US, and there is growing demand for it as a recycled material. We made the filter diameter larger than 2 inches to improve the potential to be recovered. We also provide a recycling tool to make it easier to separate the materials for recycling.3

Reusable Pod

The Bruvi® reusable pod allows you to brew any ground coffee in a refillable pod. This solution eliminates single use plastics altogether.

The Guilt Free Toss™ Explained

From Trash to Energy

An alternative pathway to responsible waste management while helping to offset Carbon Emissions (GHG)

Bruvi® B-Pods® are the first and only coffee pods designed to be tossed in the trash without guilt.

Unlike typical plastic single-serve pods, which take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill environment, Bruvi® B-Pods® have been uniquely designed to biodegrade in a landfill in only a handful of years, without leaving microplastics behind.1

Today, all US municipal landfills are closed environments and are required to capture, then flare the off-gases. About 50% of active municipal landfills do even better and effectively repurpose most of the gasses into renewable energy, with more pending projects across the US.4 All of which means that B-Pods® can ultimately be used to power cities and run turbines. And there’s nothing trashy about that.

Not Your Father’s Landfill

Landfills that don’t have LFGTE programs still flare the majority of gasses collected to prevent them from entering the atmosphere.

Landfill Degradation Test Results

ASTM D5526 test for the B-Pod® outer cup shows the propensity for Bruvi® B-Pods® to be used for waste to energy conversion in a landfill environment. B-Pod® outer cup biodegrades 63% in 577 days in anaerobic landfill conditions, vs. 2% degradation for untreated polypropylene.

How to Recycle B-Pods

Yes, it takes a few steps, but here’s how to recycle B-Pods®. We offer a recycling tool, which is available free upon request. Please also check locally to be sure your community accepts PP#5.

Remove Lid

Using the Bruvi® recycle tool3, remove the lid and discard. Scrape off any excess foil from the filter and outer cup.

Dispose or compost the coffee grounds.

Recycle the empty cup and inner filter.

All B-Pods are BPA free and food safe.

IMPORTANT CALIFORNIA NOTICE: California law prohibits the sale of plastic packaging and plastic products that are labeled with the terms “biodegradable”, “degradable”, or “compostable” or any form of those terms, or imply that in any way the item will break down, biodegrade or decompose in a landfill or other environment. These restrictions apply to all sales in or into California, including internet sales.

1 Accelerated biodegradation claims are based on ASTM D5526 testing showing that treated polypropylene used in B-Pod outer cups biodegrades 63% in an anaerobic environment (e.g., landfill) in 577 days compared to 2% biodegradation of untreated polypropylene. Please check your local municipal landfill for participation as not all facilities use LFTGE solutions.

2 Check locally. Not recycled in all communities.

3 Recycle tool available upon request.

4 Bruvi is a member of LMOP and supports landfill gas to energy efforts in accordance with current EPA and Waste Management programs. Out of approximately 2,000 active municipal landfills in the US, there are 634 active Landfill Gas to Energy (LFGTE) projects in 49 states, producing 17 billion kwh, with more projects pending.
