Eco-Friendly B-Pods™

The Plastic End of Life Problem

There’s a lot of plastic in the world, including food packaging. It’s convenient, affordable, food safe and preserves freshness (which reduces food waste). Yet we all know the issues with single use plastic. In fact, the problem isn’t plastic per se, it’s plastic waste. Despite good intentions, only 9% of plastic is actually recycled.

How Bruvi® is Addressing It

We believe in smart, practical solutions that reflect the realities of the existing infrastructure for recycling and waste disposal. That’s why our B-Pods are uniquely designed to offer a choice of two disposal options: recyclability in communities that accept this type of packaging 2, or an ingenious solution that enables used B-Pods to simply be tossed in the trash as is. Our breakthrough B-Pods offer you an alternative – and our recommended - pathway to more responsible waste management – The Guilt Free Toss™. These are small steps in the right direction, one pod at a time.

Responsible Options. Your Choice.

Guilt Free Toss™

B-Pods™ can simply be tossed in the trash after use. No need to peel the lid, wash the cup or separate out the coffee grounds. That’s because B-Pods™ are made for disposal in a landfill. They are uniquely designed to substantially break down much more rapidly than untreated plastics, through an organic process that leaves no microplastics behind. In applicable landfills, B-Pods can also play a role in Landfill Gas to Energy projects, creating renewable energy and bringing enhanced end-of-life value.1

It should go without saying, but please do not litter.

B-Pods™ (the outer cup, inner filter and cap) are made to be recyclable. We use PP#5 (polypropylene) as it is accepted for curbside recycling in a majority of communities in the US, and there is a growing demand for it as a recycled material. We made the filter diameter larger than two inches to improve the potential to be recovered. We recommend that you check locally as not all communities accept these items. We also know that recycling pods takes some work. That’s why we provide a recycling tool to make it easier to separate the materials for recycling. Because recycling may not be an appropriate solution for everyone, we also offer an alternative, our innovative Guilt Free Toss™ option, (which is our preferred disposal method).

Reusable Pod

The Bruvi® reusable pod allows you to brew any ground coffee in a refillable pod. This solution eliminates single use plastics altogether.

From Trash to Potential Energy

An alternative pathway to responsible waste management

Bruvi B-Pods™ are uniquely designed to be tossed in the trash without guilt.

Unlike untreated plastic single-serve pods, or even compostable pods, which take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill environment, Bruvi B-Pods substantially break down over a few years, in an organic process without leaving microplastics behind.

Today, US municipal landfills (where our household trash ends up) are closed environments and are required to capture, then flare the off-gasses. About 50% of active municipal landfills do even better and repurpose collected methane into clean renewable energy, through Landfill to Gas Energy projects, with more pending projects across the US.4 All of that means that in applicable landfills with active LFGTE projects, B-Pods can be part of the renewable energy creation, which ultimately can be used to power cities and run turbines. Bruvi is doing our small part - one pod at a time - to support these efforts, in order to bring enhanced end-of-life value to our pod packaging. And there’s nothing trashy about that.

Not Your Father’s Landfill

Landfills that don’t have LFGTE programs still flare the majority of gasses collected to prevent them from entering the atmosphere.

Landfill Degradation Test Results

ASTM D5526 test for the B-Pod™ outer cup shows the propensity for Bruvi® B-Pods™ to be used for waste to energy conversion in a landfill environment. B-Pod™ outer cup biodegrades 63% in 577 days in anaerobic landfill conditions, vs. 2% degradation for untreated polypropylene. ASTM D5511 testing of the entire B-Pod (outer cup, inner filter, cap and lid) shows 17.5% biodegradation in an anaerobic environment as of 101 days (testing ongoing).

How to Recycle B-Pods

Yes, it takes a few steps, but here’s how to recycle B-Pods™. We offer a recycling tool, which is available free with the purchase of the Bruvi Bundle or brewer. Please also check locally to be sure your community accepts PP#5.

Be sure the B-Pod has cooled before using the recycling tool.

Remove Film

Press the Release button on the Bruvi Recycling Tool3 to access the blade. Insert the blade into the center hole of the pod. Slowly rotate the blade to be sure it punctures the entire film. Peel away all of the foil by hand. Discard.

Remove Pod Cap

Place the pod into the Recycling Tool. Twist one full turn to cut off the pod cap. Lift the interior plastic pod cap with the blade.

Dispose or compost the coffee grounds.

Recycle the empty cup, inner filter and pod cap.
