B-Pods

The Guilt Free Toss®

An ingenious pod disposal solution, unique to B–Pods®. Because recycling just isn't as effective as you may think.

The Plastic End of Life Problem

There’s a lot of plastic in the world, including food packaging. It’s convenient, affordable, food safe and preserves freshness (which reduces food waste). Yet, we all know the issues with single-use plastic. In fact, the problem isn’t plastic per se, it’s plastic waste. And though consumers have embraced the idea of recycling, the reality isn’t so simple. Despite best intentions, only about 9% of all plastic is actually recycled, and small coffee capsules are especially challenging to process. Once in landfills, untreated plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose. Compostable bioplastic pods sound good but with little industrial composting infrastructure, those pods most often also end up in landfills with a similar result.

That’s why Bruvi decided to invest our time and resources to develop a more practical solution.

Introducing the Guilt Free Toss®

Guilt Free Toss

Only B-Pods can simply be tossed in the trash after use.* Yes, you read that right.

No need to peel the lid, separate out the coffee grounds or wash the cup. That’s because B-Pods are made for disposal in a landfill. They are uniquely designed to substantially break down much more rapidly than untreated plastics, through an organic process that leaves no microplastics behind. In applicable landfills, B-Pods can also play a role in Landfill Gas to Energy projects, creating renewable energy and bringing enhanced end-of-life value.1

Our breakthrough B-Pods are by no means the ultimate solution for waste management or climate preservation but they do offer a more practical alternative given the realities of the existing infrastructure for recycling and waste disposal.

From Trash to Potential Energy

An alternative pathway to responsible waste management

Bruvi B-Pods® are uniquely designed to be tossed in the trash without guilt.

Unlike untreated plastic single-serve pods, or even compostable pods, which take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill environment, Bruvi B-Pods substantially break down over a few years, in an organic process without leaving microplastics behind.

Today, all 1,280 US municipal landfills (where our household trash ends up) are highly regulated environments and have landfill gas capture infrastructure in place. Even better, 493 landfills actually repurpose collected methane into clean renewable energy, through Landfill to Gas Energy projects. In simple terms, current capacity for electricity generation can power over 1 million homes for a year. Plus the EPA has identified an additional 474 candidates for these programs. All of that means that in applicable landfills with active LFGTE projects, B-Pods can be part of the renewable energy creation, which ultimately can be used to power cities and run turbines. Bruvi is doing our small part - one pod at a time - to support these efforts, in order to bring enhanced end-of-life value to our pod packaging. And there’s nothing trashy about that.

Landfill Degradation Test Results

ASTM D5526 test for the B-Pod outer cup shows the propensity for Bruvi B-Pods to be used for waste to energy conversion in a landfill environment. B-Pod outer cup biodegrades 63% in 577 days in anaerobic landfill conditions, vs. 2% degradation for untreated polypropylene. ASTM D5511 testing of the entire B-Pod (outer cup, inner filter, cap and lid) shows 84% biodegradation in an anaerobic environment as of 534 days (testing ongoing).
