Saka Matcha Q&A

Bruvi recently introduced Saka LIghtly Sweetened Matcha to our B-Pod offering, bringing a high quality matcha option for those who enjoy this delicious and special Japanese tea

About Saka Matcha

Saka Matcha is ceremonial grade matcha, sourced from a third generation, family-owned Japanese company. Shade grown in Shizuoka, near Mt. Fuji – the most prized tea growing region – first flush tencha is harvested each Spring. Freshly picked tencha is steamed, dried and then stone ground into vibrant green matcha powder with a distinctive sweet, slightly sweet grassy flavor.

About Saka Lightly Sweetened Matcha Tea B-Pods

Our lightly sweetened matcha tea pods combine ceremonial grade, stone milled matcha with first flush tencha tea leaves and raw cane sugar for a balance of distinctive grassy matcha flavor and a hint of sweetness.

Saka Matcha Tea Q&A

 Q: What is tencha?

A: Tencha is the highest quality Japanese tea and the raw material used to create matcha. Traditionally, it is grown in the shade for a month before harvest - resulting in leaves with a high level of chlorophyll, providing the deep green color and theanine, the amino acid responsible for sweet, full-bodied flavor.

Q. How is matcha tea made?

A: To produce matcha, the top, youngest tencha leaves are picked. The leaves are steamed, dried and cut, then milled into a powder using a granite wheel.

Q. Why do you add tencha to your matcha?

A: Combining tencha with the delicate matcha powder enhances flavor. As the tea infuses during brewing, the tencha adds more of the concentrated umami flavor characteristic of matcha. The result is a balanced cup with a distinctive slightly sweet, grassy flavor.

Q. What is ceremonial grade matcha?

A: Matcha tea grades range from food ingredient up to the highest quality used for formal tea ceremony, commonly referred to a ceremonial grade matcha.  Ceremonial grade matcha is produced from first flush tea and contains more umami. Other grades are made with either second flush tea or a mixture of first and second flush.  Saka Matcha is made with ceremonial grade matcha.
