Have You Heard? Coffee is Now Officially Healthy

It’s official! Coffee is now one of the foods the US Food and Drug Administration designates as healthy.

In December of 2024, The FDA released their long-awaited redefinition of “healthy” that for the first time specifies that coffee can be labeled as healthy, as it aligns with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendation that calorie-free beverages (like coffee) are preferred in healthy diets. The ruling officially took effect on April 28, 2025.

To meet the FDA criteria, the coffee must contain fewer than five calories per 12 ounce serving. According to the US Department of Agriculture Nutrient Database, 12 ounces of brewed coffee contains 3.55 calories.

Additionally, to be officially labelled healthy, products must include specific amounts from one or more food groups recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These groups include fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy and grains. Products must also adhere to set limits for saturated fat, sodium and added sugars

It’s no surprise that coffee is a big part of many Americans’ diets, as it’s the most consumed beverage (even more than water!). More than 2 in 3 US adults enjoyed coffee in the past day, according to research from the National Coffee Association.

So, to all our fellow coffee lovers: Raise your cup (or espresso shot or cold brew) to your favorite daily ritual. Happy brewing, everyone.
